Well, wouldn’t that be a son of a gun?

Per the National Park Service [link]:

The Paw Paw Tunnel is OPEN until Phase 2 of construction resumes. Construction is estimated to resume on or around 8/15/18.

The Paw Paw Tunnel, you will recall, is a marvel of 19th century engineering that took the C&O Canal and Towpath through a just over 3,100 foot/950 meter tunnel in order to eliminate about six miles/ten kilometers of construction through a very challenging area terrain-wise.

Originally I was resigned to the idea that I was going to be walking my loaded bike across a strenuous pass up and over the tunnel, as the closure was originally announced by the Park Service to commence on August 1st.  That has now apparently been slid back 15 days.

So am I home free?  Will I get to see and travel through the Paw Paw Tunnel after all?

August 15th.

August 15th. Wouldn’t that just be a son of a gun, to have the tunnel literally closed in my face the day I get to it?  Well, I’m staying at the Stickpile Hill Hiker/Biker Campground the night before I get to the tunnel and it is only a short distance past there to the downstream portal.  I may just have to keep going and find a campsite on the other side.
