Eleven days, 550 miles to go

Wheel full 70px I stayed my first night in Florida in a Jacksonville city park campground along the coast.

Wheel full 70px I also took my last ferry ride of the trip, all of about 10 minutes long over the St. Johns River.

Wheel full 70px The ferry is part of the East Coast Greenway route.

Wheel full 70px I am of the opinion after 10 weeks of riding that the ECG is more hype than anything else, and is not really a serious effort to link up points along the Atlantic Coast for bicycle travelers.  So many rants, though, and so little time.

Wheel full 70px I started this morning just above the “n” in Jacksonville on the map below.

Wheel full 70px I’ll ride through St. Augustine and hit the 50 mile/80 kilometer point north of Palm Coast, but haven’t ID’d a place to spend the night yet.  The beaches here are all gorgeous, and it’s another beautiful day for a ride.

Damn the mosquitoes, full speed ahead

Wheel full 70px My friend OldRoadDog commented on my post about pine tree gum (which you can find here [linkie]) and hit a sore spot.  The comment read

Also, in Canada the mosquitoes hang out in the shaded tree areas. Pitch the tent 20 yards or more from the trees.

Wheel full 70px I hate mosquitoes.  A lot. A hatred based on intense familiarity at several points in time in my life.  So I started a response and realized that I was really writing a post.  So here it is- I wrote

I’ve had two nights with mosquitoes out of the whole trip. I’ve used a can of cheapoTarget 10% DEET spray to ward them off. It’s worked like a charm, but I’m well aware that I might come down with some DEET-induced cancer of the frammis gland when I’m 113.  And I don’t care.

Us old guys can do anything we want, pretty much. With a ~20 year life expectancy at this point I am not going to put up with getting bit by mosquitoes today in order to not use a product that has a miniscule change of hurting you if you use it regularly over a full lifetime. Sunburn is in the same category. I will finish this trip with parts of me baked pretty brown. Am I worried about skin cancer? Sure, in the abstract. Am I worried about it affecting me? Not a bit. Not one bit.

Wheel full 70px So there you have it. Sorry about the ranting… I do that sometimes. But, like they say, better out than in.

So far so good

Wheel full 70px Well, 1,435 air miles/2,300 kilometers down.

Wheel full 70px The flight to Orlando boards in about two hours.  It gets in at five in the morning tomorrow.  What are they doing, driving the plane there?

Wheel full 70px So, before I start addressing substantive stuff, I need to rant.  It is clear that the WordPress app and the iPhone 6 Plus hate each other.  Images are just about impossible to insert without causing huge consternation, the cursor jumps around randomly, saves are sometimes a roll of the dice, cutting and pasting  anything simply doesn’t work most of the time.  Those sorts of things.  I could go on, but I’ll bet you get the picture.  I’m looking at 10 or so weeks of this sort of frustration, but I’ll do that without complaint for you folks who are so kind as to read and even follow this blog.  Some issues are created by my slow progress up the learning curve, but others indicate to me that the app is seriously broken.

Wheel full 70px Anyway, rant off. I need to go and enter the contents of Alaska Airlines’ wretched “Tapas Box” into MyFitnessPal.
