First really chilly morning. Sunny though. Should warm up quickly.
I’ll ride through Kennebunkport today. Anything you want me to pass along to the locals?

I’ll ride through Kennebunkport today. Anything you want me to pass along to the locals?

I’ll remind anyone who wants to be in touch directly that my email during the ride is:

And here I am, just where I’d planned to make it to yesterday.

I’m headed off on a short side trip to get my shoes fixed.

The glue kinda sorta worked- it never sealed up tight, but it stopped further progress of the front flap separating from the shoe.

The right shoe has more or less stayed where it was. I’ll be glad when they’re back to spec.
Then it’s on to New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Beantown, where I’ll catch a ferry to the tip of Cape Cod. Stay tuned.

…than I had planned this morning.
I picked up some ‘bicyclist’s bane’ in my rear tire and had to patch the tube. On the way now. More about this later.
Oh, and it’s still raining.

It looks like my sunny day streak is about to end.

But there’s a promise of better things to come as I approach Boston.

I’ll be at the Center Street Bike Shop in Brunswick, Maine this morning, getting the Surly checked over and picking up a package from home that the shop is holding for me. Then it’s on to at least the outskirts of Portland. The last of Maine’s hills should be in my rear view mirror today.

I have around 2,500 calories left to consume for the day after eating that Subway sandwich mid-day.
What suggestions does anyone have for dinner? I’m near a city, so there’s pretty much any fast food or pizza nearby as an option, or there’s a large market just down the road. Any ideas?
I deal with this situation most every day. Even though I’m losing weight, I don’t feel like I’m handling it consistently.

Double meat roast beef. Yummmm!
I’ll still come up at least 1,000 calories short for the day.
As promised, I’ve updated the projected dates I will be at various places along my route in the way to Key West based on my taking more time in Maine.
Portland 9/24
Boston 9/28
Newport 10/3
New London 10/5
NYC 10/9
Cape May 10/13
Virginia Beach 10/17
Ocracoke 10/21
Myrtle Beach 10/25
Charleston 10/27
Savannah 10/30
Daytona Beach 11/3
Miami 11/8
Key West 11/10
This is about as final as it gets, as I have promised Heather I will be on my way back to Alaska by the end of the second week of November.
I will be contacting all the folks who have expressed an interest in getting together as I pass through over the next few days to discuss more specific arrangements.

Foggy day
I’m beginning to get a handle on the things that, as far as I’m concerned, are “must haves” on my long bike trip. Mind you, this is because they fit my style of bike touring, so what might be essential for me could be so much dead weight to a different rider.

I use my iPhone throughout my riding day as a bike computer, GPS, map server, and entertainment center. This would ordinarily run the phone’s battery down in three to four hours. You may recall that I sent my solar panel home- what was I thinking? And my Schmidt Dynamo hub has turned out to be great for powering the bike’s front and rear lights but, as for my plan to have it power a USB charging port- well, let’s just say that it was an expensive experiment.

The one thing I got right was my purchase of two high-capacity Anker 20100 storage cells from Amazon. Each one of these can keep my iPhone going all day and into the next day if necessary, along with charging camera batteries, Bluetooth speaker and my Bad Elf Pro GPS as needed. They charge overnight- taking about 10 hours, and I alternate them so as to always have one ready. Each weighs about 3/4 of a pound/.3 kg. They are small enough to fit nicely into my handlebar bag without taking up a lot of space. I would still buy the power hub again for the bike lights, but for all other power needs these are all I would bring.
Highly recommended.

Rockport, Maine
I was a mile from the campground I planned to stay at last night and it was late in the day, but I couldn’t ride by this place without stopping.

It will get a post of its own down the road a bit, but I wanted to show you two of the local delicacies I enjoyed at my picnic table about an hour later.
I have a weakness for pickled beets. Not many other people do, so more for me!

These were particularly wonderful. They worked maple syrup into the recipe somehow. Yes, yes. I did eat the entire jar.

And I washed it down with blueberry root beer. I figured if I was being bad, I might as well go all the way. Cheers!
